New England Championship – Game One:

New Canaan, Connecticut 11 West Warwick, R.I. 5

After being upset by West Warwick, 5-4, in the Loser’s Bracket Tuesday night, New Canaan’s dream of traveling to Abbeville, Louisiana became more difficult, but still a reality to the tournament favorites.  With a little help from Mother Nature, New Canaan was able to get two extra days of rest for their pitching ace, Zach Allen.   Because Wednesday night’s game was suspended after three innings due to rain, the game was completed on Friday night.  Allen, who had pitched three solid innings on Wednesday, received two additional days rest for Saturday – rest which meant trouble for the West Warwick nine.

Led by Allen’s two hit pitching and an offensive blitzkrieg of 13 hits (seven of their nine starters had hits), New Canaan jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings and coasted to an 11-5 victory in game one of the championship.

Allen, who had given up two runs on three hits, two walks, and one hit batsmen on Tuesday night, was sharp on Saturday morning.  The burly right hander allowed only two hits (Matt Grenier and Kyle Henseler), struck out five and did not walk a batter during the first three innings of the game.

While Allen was keeping West Warwick off the scoreboard, New Canaan opened up the game in the top of the third inning by scoring seven runs on five hits and three walks.  Providing the hits for New Canaan were Zach Smith (two run single), Thomas Williams (r.b.i. double), Jimmy Fahey (r.b.i. double), David Giusti (two singles and 1 r.b.i. in the inning).

In the bottom of the fifth inning, West Warwick rallied for two runs when Ray Zincone reached on an error, Matt Grenier doubled to left center, and Tyler Boisclair doubled to right center.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, West Warwick rallied for three more runs on hits by Andrew In (single), Kyle Henseler (single), Ray Zincone (r.b.i. double), and Matt Grenier (two run single).  The rally, however, fell short as reliever, Thomas Williams, got the last two batters of the game on a groundout and strikeout.

Offensively, West Warwick was led by Kyle Henseler (2 for 4, one run scored), Ray Zincone (1 for 4, one double, two runs scored, and 1 r.b.i.), Matt Grenier (3 for 4, one double, one run scored, and 2 r.b.i.’s), Tyler Boisclair (1 for 4, one double, and 2 r.b.i.’s), Joe Maynard (1 for 2), Andrew In (1 for 2, one run scored).

New Canaan was led by the hitting of Harry Molloy (1 for 2), Kyle Levasseur (1 for 3, two runs scored), Zach Allen (1 for 3, one run scored), Zach Smith (2 for 3, two run scored, and 3 r.b.i.’s), Justin Clark (2 for 3, two doubles and one run scored), Thomas Williams (1 for 4, one double and 1 r.b.i.), Jimmy Fahey, 1 for 3, one double, one run scored, and 1 r.b.i.), David Giusti (3 for 4, two runs scored and 1 r.b.i.), and Liam Lisec (1 for 1).

Exuberance-Anticipation-Anxiety-Frustration-Disappointment …  These are the words which describe the roller coaster ride of emotions which the 10 year old All Stars from West Warwick felt over the course of the 2008 Ten Year Old New England Regional this past week.  West Warwick, which lost last year’s Nine Year Old New England Championship to New Milford (Connecticut), were in position to do something that no other Rhode Island Cal Ripken (formerly known as the Bambino Division of Babe Ruth Baseball) team had ever done – advance to a World Series.  West Warwick, however, saw their hopes come to a disappointing end when a talented and determined nine from New Canaan, Connecticut bounced back from an earlier loss to West Warwick (Tuesday) and won three consecutive games, including two games on Saturday against West Warwick to advance to the Ten Year Old World Series in Abbeville, Louisiana (August 7th – 15th).

Although West Warwick came up short in their bid to become the first Rhode Island team to travel to a World Series, this group of All Stars keeps improving year to year.  During the past two years, the majority of this group has gone 19-5 in district, state, and regional play.  Four of those five losses have come at the hands of New Milford and New Canaan of Connecticut.  After a week of pondering of what could have been, the core of this group will start thinking of next year’s Eleven Year Old New England Regional which will be held in Waterville, Maine.

New England Championship – Game Two:

New Canaan, Connecticut 6 West Warwick, R.I. 2

Led by the timely hitting of Zach Smith and Zach Allen, New Canaan held off a late sixth inning West Warwick rally and advanced to the 2008 Ten Year Old Cal Ripken World Series with a 6-2 victory.

Zach Allen, the tournament Most Valuable Player, continued where he left off in game one, by shutting out West Warwick on one hit while striking out three in the first three innings of the game.  Allen (5-1 in the tournament) struck out 25 batters and gave up only five earned runs on seven hits in 17 innings of work.  In his nine innings of work against West Warwick, he allowed only two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out 14.

Matt Grenier, who earned a victory against New Canaan on Tuesday night, pitched well for West Warwick.  In five innings of work, the right hander allowed no earned runs on five hits while striking out seven.  Grenier (2-1 in the tournament) struck out 18 batters and gave up only one earned run on eight hits in 11 innings of work.  In his nine innings of work against New Canaan, he limited their potent offense to seven runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out 15.

During the first two innings of play, the game remained scoreless with both Allen and Grenier giving up one hit a piece.

In the bottom of the third inning, New Canaan made the most of their opportunities and took a 2-0 lead on one timely bloop hit, one walk, and one error.  Colin Tiller led off with walk, advanced to second on an error, and reached third on a passed ball.  With runners at second (Kyle Levasseur) and third (Tiller), Grenier struck out Zach Allen and got Alex LaPolice to pop up to first baseman, Tyler Boisclair, for the second out of the inning.  With two outs and two runners in scoring position, Zach Smith, who had robbed Grenier of an extra base hit in the top of the third inning on a catch at the fence in center field with one out and a runner at second base, blooped a two run single which fell in front of a charging West Warwick outfielder for a 2-0 lead.  After surrounding the two out single, Grenier struck out the next batter to end the inning.

After reliever David Giusti retired West Warwick on ten pitches in a 1-2-3 top of the fourth inning, New Canaan broke the game open with four runs on two hits, one error, and one walk after two outs were made in the bottom half of the inning.  After Giusti reached first on a two out error, Harry Molloy fouled off two pitches before reaching first base on a base on balls.  Kyle Levasseur, then, hit a bloop single to center which scored Giusti.  Next, Zach Allen, who had struck out three times in four previous at bats against Grenier, got the better of the West Warwick ace by sending a 1-1 pitch over the fence in left center for a three run home run and a 6-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth inning, West Warwick scored two runs on consecutive hits by Matt Grenier (single), Tyler Boisclair (single), and Trevor Lawton (two run single).  Giusti, however, retired the next three batters on groundouts and secured a trip to Abbeville, Louisiana for New Canaan.

Offensively for West Warwick, they received contributions from Grenier (1 for 2), Boisclair (1 for 3), one run scored), Lawton (1 for 3, 2 r.b.i.’s), Mitchell Moore (1 for 3), and Mike Pellerin (1 for 1).

New Canaan received hits from Kyle Levasseur (1 for 3, two runs scored and 1 r.b.i.), Zach Allen (1 for 3, one home run and 3 r.b.i.’s), Zach Smith (2 for 3, 2 r.b.i.’s), and Thomas Williams (1 for 3).

New Canaan, Connecticut 11 South Weymouth, Massachusetts 6

Led by an eleven hit attack (seven singles, two doubles, one triple, and one home run), the Connecticut 10 year old State Champions advanced to the New England Regional Championship with an 11-6 victory over South Weymouth (Eastern Massachusetts Champion).  The win, which took three days (suspended game after three innings on Wednesday) to get, sets up a rematch between New Canaan and West Warwick (Rhode Island State Champions).

Although South Weymouth jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a double by Alex Rosario and a sacrifice bunt by Jason Davern, New Canaan scored seven runs on six hits (Kyle Levasseur - double, Zach Allen - single, Alex LaPolice - r.b.i. double, Zach Smith - single, Justin Clark - two run single, and Harry Molloy - r.b.i. single).

After starter Zach Allen retired the side in order in the top of the second inning, Alex LaPolice put New Canaan ahead, 9-2, with a home run in the bottom half of the inning.

In the bottom of the third inning, New Canaan pulled away by scoring two more runs on on an error, walk, an r.b.i. single by Zach Allen.

In the  the top of the fifth inning, South Weymouth cut the lead to 11-6 on hits by Eric Keefe (single), Alex Rosario (single), Brandon Umano (r.b.i. double), Neal Vittelo (r.b.i. double), and Chris Flipp (r.b.i. single).

Unfortunately for the Eastern Massachusetts Champions, New Canaan's Thomas Williams settled in and allowed only one hit the top of the sixth inning.

Offensively, New Canaan received contributions form Colin Tiller (run scored), Kyle Levasseur (2 for 2, one double and one triple), Liam Lisec (two walks and one run scored), Zach Allen (2 for 3, two run scored), Alex LaPolice ( 2 for 4, double, home run, and two runs scored), Zach Smith (1 for 4, on run scored), Justin Clark (2 for 4, one run scored), Harry Molloy (single and run scored), Jimmy Fahey (run scored), and David Guisti (1 for 2).

Offensively, South Weymouth was led by Eric Keefe (2 for 3, two runs scored), Alex Rosario (2 for 3, one double, two runs scored), Brandon Umano (1 for 4, double and one run scored), Neal Vittelo (1 for 1, one double, two walks, and one run scored), and Chris Flipp (1 for 3).
